Introduction to TRS In Situ Thermal Remediation (ISTR) Technologies

By far, the two most commonly applied in situ thermal remediation technologies are electrical resistance heating (ERH) and thermal conduction heating (TCH). ERH works equally well in the vadose and saturated zones; ERH does not desiccate the matrix; and ERH is generally more energy efficient than TCH when remediating volatile organic compounds (VOCs). TCH is ideal for remediating VOCs, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), polychlorinated biphenyls PCBs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
